North Carolina State
Colored Normal School 1877-1939
North Carolina State Colored Normal School was
established in 1877 by an act of
the North Carolina legislature, which provided for the establishment of a teacher
training institution for Black North Carolinians. The Howard
School, established in 1867, in Fayetteville was selected to
become the State Colored Normal School, and thus become the
first and oldest state-supported institution of its kind in
North Carolina.
These are the earliest college catalogs that have been
located. They include names of the administrators, teachers and
students. The academic calendar, descriptions of the institution and
its location, conditions of membership, tuition costs, length of the term,
discipline, courses of study, examinations and certificates earned.
