Laptop Checkout Policies and Procedures

Eligibility

Laptop computers may be checked out from the circulation desk of Chesnutt Library for use exclusively within the Library.  Only current FSU students, faculty, and staff are eligible to check out laptop computers. Laptops must be used directly by eligible patrons.  An eligible patron is only allowed to checkout one laptop at a time. A valid FSU ID and a second form of photo identification (i.e. Driver's License, Military ID Card) must be presented upon checkout.  The second form of identification will be held at the Circulation Desk until the laptop is returned and checked over by library staff.  A laptop checkout agreement must be signed with each laptop checkout.  If you have any blocks or fines on your library record you will NOT be able to borrow a laptop until the restrictions are cleared.

Loan Periods and Availability

Laptops circulate for three (3) hour increments, and may be renewed, if availability allows. Laptops are available on a first come, first served basis, and may not be reservedEach user is responsible for making sure that he or she does not exceed the three hour checkout period.  Fines will be assessed if the return is after three hours.   All laptops are due back two (2) hours before the library closes. Laptops will not be checked out three hours before the library closes.

Limitations on Use

Laptops may be used in Chesnutt Library only, they are not allowed to leave the building.  Laptops should never be left unattended anywhere in the Library, or left unattended upon return to the Circulation Desk.  Food and/or drink are not allowed in the Library and should not be in the immediate vicinity of a laptop.  Users may save their documents to their University account or e-mail their information to their e-mail account.  Any software, files, plug-ins, etc. saved to the laptop will be removed automatically upon restart.  No borrower shall have any expectation of privacy with regard to any information on or in any laptop, and FSU reserves unto itself and its agents the right to review any and all information in or on the laptop for any reason, at any time, without notice to the borrower.

FSU reserves the right to terminate the loan of any laptop at any time, without notice to the borrower, if a FSU employee reasonably believes that the laptop has been abandoned by the borrower, used in violation of FSU policy, or used in a manner that is likely to damage the machine beyond reasonable wear and tear.

Overdue, Replacement, and Processing Fees

Patrons will be charged a fee of $10.00 for each hour or any portion thereof that a laptop or accessory is overdue with a maximum fee assessment of $150.00. Grace periods are not allowed with the checkout of laptops.  The replacement cost of a lost, damaged, or stolen laptop computer will be the cost of the item's replacement plus a $25 processing fee.  Whom ever borrows a laptop will be responsible for its safe return to the Circulation Desk.  Charges are listed in the table below:
