                       Government Documents Department

Government documents are information resources produced by local, state, and federal

governments. They can include the texts of laws, regulations, statistics, scientific and
technical information, and detailed analyses of exceptionally wide and sophisticated topics
ranging from agriculture to zoology. The United States Government is the world's largest
  publisher and producer
unique and essential information for historians and for in many
  contemporary subject areas.

Established by Congress in 1813, the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) was
created to ensure  that the American public would have access to their Government's
  information.  The
Government Printing Office (GPO) disseminates information products
issued by all three branches of the government to more than 1,250 federal depository
libraries through the FDLP.  Government documents are freely available to the pubic at
designated federal depository libraries within academic and public libraries, law school
libraries, and federal agency libraries across the country. The Fayetteville State
University's, Charles W. Chesnutt Library, has been a senatorial designated
depository library for U.S. government publications since 1973.

The Government Documents Department is located on the fourth floor of Chesnutt
Library, and the librarian selects, acquires, and processes federal and state depository
publications. Reference Services are available in the government documents department
and at the reference desk on the first floor.

                        Our Documents Collections

The library currently selects 40% of the publications of the federal government, which are distributed by the federal depository library program. The formats of the collections include books, pamphlets, magazines, maps, microfiche, reports and monographs, CD-ROMs and online electronic resources.  As a selective depository library, Chesnutt Library also provides services and information sources to the general public of North Carolina’s 7th Congressional District, including Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base.

Chesnutt Library also participates in the North Carolina Documents Depository Program and selects 75% of what the State of North Carolina publishes.  Beginning in Spring, 2009, the N.C. State Depository Program launched its Digital Depository Collection, which makes many current and historical documents available to the public.

All depository publications are selected and acquired based on their relevancy in supporting Fayetteville State University’s academic curriculum and meeting the regional users’ information interests.

Federal and N. C. State publications are primarily housed in the Government Documents Department located on the fourth floor of the library.  These publications are arranged by the Superintendent of Documents Classification System, which corresponds to the structure of the Federal and N.C. State Governments.

Documents located outside of the Government Collection can be located by searching in the Online Catalog.  Some documents are located in the Periodicals Department and are arranged alphabetically by title.  Statistical and reference material type documents are sent to the Reference Department and are classified in the Library of Congress Call Number System.

Topographical and political maps receive special treatment and are housed on the fourth floor. Government Printing Office (GPO) Access, other Internet online services, CD-ROMs and DVD products are available through a computer located in the Government Documents area and through computers located in the Reference Department.  Microfiche materials are located in the Government Documents Collections and a reader-printer is available for patron use on the fourth floor near the stairwell and on the first floor in the Periodicals Department.
