Special Collections

The Special Collections consists
of collections of materials that have been received by by the
University or Library from a private individual or a group.
They often contain personal papers (letters and business
correspondence), cards, photographs, unpublished manuscripts,
memorabilia, scrapbooks, certificates, diplomas, realia, and many
other kinds of information.
The Special Collections area also includes
numerous books that relate to the "African American
Experience" in education, politics, the civil rights movement,
slavery and the Emancipation Era. Biographies, novels and
other publications about African Americans are also located here.
They can be accessed through FSU's
Automated Catalog. Books are arranged by Library of
Congress Classification.
Who May Use the Special Collections? The
Special Collections area is may be accessed by faculty,
administrators, students, staff and community patrons.
There are certain policies and procedures that
govern use (please see
Use
Guidelines for Archives & Special Collections and Conditions
of Use Agreement).
Do Materials Circulate?
Materials are RESTRICTED and must be used
within the department. Some photocopying may be allowed based
upon the Library Staff's discretion. Materials are not
available for regular checkout.
Why would I use the Special Collections
materials? They would
be especially useful to those who want to do in-depth
the Chesnutt Family, J. Ward Seabrook, Rudolph Jones, and subjects
relating to the "African American Experience."
