University Archives holds the official records and other historically significant materials that relate to Fayetteville State University. The ultimate disposition of the university's records is based on a state approved Records Retention and Disposition Schedule which defines the length of time records are to be kept, disposition and, if deemed permanent, their transfer top the archives. The department assesses University records are reviewed to assess their arrangement, level of processing that will be required and preservation needs. These activities help ensure the optimal research value and usability of the records.

The University Archives is open to faculty, administrators, students, staff and members of the community. Visitors are required to follow the policies and procedures which govern the use of these records, and the directions of the University Archivist. Unlike other library materials, archival records must be used within the department. Items may be photocopied if it is deemed safe by the University Archivist.
