Laptop and iPad Guidelines

Eligibility for Laptops

There are laptops designated for circulation within the Library and laptops designated exclusively for faulty and staff that can be checked out to take outside of the Library.  Laptop computers may be checked out from the circulation desk of Chesnutt Library.  Only current FSU students, faculty, and staff are eligible to check out laptop computers. Laptops must be used directly by eligible patrons.  An eligible patron is only allowed to checkout one technology item at a time (one laptop or one iPad at a time). A valid FSU ID and a second form of photo identification (i.e. Driver's License, Military ID Card) must be presented upon checkout.  For students, both forms of identification will be held at the Circulation Desk until the laptop is returned and checked over by library staff.  For faculty and staff, a photocopy of both forms of ID will be kept on file until the laptop is returned.  A laptop checkout agreement must be signed with each laptop checkout.  If you have any blocks or fines on your library record you will NOT be eligible to borrow a laptop until the restrictions are cleared.

Eligibility for iPads

There are several iPads designated for circulation outside of the Library.  These iPads may be checked out from the Circulation Desk by current, eligible FSU students, faculty and staff in good Library standing. iPads must be used directly by the eleigible patron.  An eligible patron is only allowed to checkout one technology item at a time (one laptop or one iPad at a time).  A valid FSU ID and a second form of photo identification (i.e. Driver's License, Military ID Card) must be presented upon checkout.  A photocopy of both forms of identification will be kept on file with the iPad checkout agreement.  An iPad checkout agreement must be completed and signed for the iPad checked out.  If you have any blocks or fines on your library record, you will not be eligible to borrow an iPad until the restrictions are cleared.

Loan Periods and Availability for Laptops

For students, laptops circulate in three (3) hour increments, and may be renewed, if availability allows. Laptops are available on a first come, first served basis, and may not be reserved.  Each user is responsible for making sure that he or she does not exceed the three hour checkout period.  Fines will be assessed if the return is after three hours at the rate of $10.00 per hour.  All laptops are due back thirty(30) minutes before the library closes. Laptops will not be checked out thirty(30) minutes before the library closes.

For faculty and staff, laptops circulate for seven (7) days, and may be renewed, if availability allows for another seven (7) days. Laptops are available on a first come, first served basis, and may not be reserved.  Each user is responsible for making sure that he or she does not exceed the seven (7) day checkout period. Limitations on Use

Circulating Laptops may be used by students, faculty and staff within Chesnutt Library only.  Laptops are not allowed to leave through the library's security gates into the student lounge or outside of the building. 

Faculty and staff have a designated set of laptops that are allowed to be checked out for seven (7) days and can leave the building. 

Students, faculty and staff have access to checkout iPads for seven (7) days and they can leave the building.

Laptops and iPads should never be left unattended anywhere, this includes the Library, or left unattended upon return to the Circulation Desk.  Food and/or drink are not allowed in the Library and should not be in the immediate vicinity of a laptop or iPad.  Users may save their documents to their University account or e-mail their information to their e-mail account.  Any software, files, plug-ins, etc. saved to the laptop will be removed automatically upon restart.  No borrower shall have any expectation of privacy with regard to any information on or in any laptop or iPad, and FSU reserves unto itself and its agents the right to review any and all information in or on the laptop or iPad for any reason, at any time, without notice to the borrower.

FSU reserves the right to terminate the loan of any laptop or iPad at any time, without notice to the borrower, if a FSU employee reasonably believes that the laptop or iPad has been abandoned by the borrower, used in violation of FSU policy, or used in a manner that is likely to damage the machine beyond reasonable wear and tear.

Overdue, Replacement, and Processing Fees

Students, faculty and staff  will be charged a fee of $10.00 for each hour or any portion thereof that a circulating laptop within the Library or accessory is overdue with a maximum fee assessment of $150.00.  

The replacement cost of a lost, damaged, or stolen laptop computer or iPad or any accessory will be the cost of the item's replacement plus a $25 processing fee per item. If a laptop or iPad is returned in a book drop, there will be a $50.00 processing fee. Whom ever borrows a laptop or iPad will be responsible for its safe return to the Circulation Desk.  Charges are listed in the table below:
