Collection Development
The selection of library materials for the Chesnutt Library is the joint
responsibility of the faculty and library staff. While it is the prerogative of
every faculty member to participate in selection of library resources in their
particular expertise, the primary responsibility for collection development lies
with the Office of Collection Development, as that office shoulders
responsibility for maintaining a balanced collection and ensuring that selection
decisions are within budgetary constraints.
Duane Bogenschneider (ext.
1520), Associate Director for Collection Development, heads the Office of
Collection Development. He is assisted by Anna
Sumerour (ext. 1239), Library Services Clerk, who provides administrative
and clerical assistance.
It is the desire of the office to work closely with academic departments and
faculty to develop and provide the needed library resources to support
successful teaching, the curriculum, and academic research. A goal of this
newsletter is to foster better communication between faculty and the library
concerning library resources. We thank the faculty for their support in
the collection development effort.
New Databases
More and more library information is available electronically. The
Chesnutt Library currently provides access to over 150 electronic databases that
offer a wide variety of information in many different subject areas. To
view all of the databases available to you, use Database
Finder on the library web site. Most of this electronic information can be
accessed in the library, from offices and classrooms on campus, and from the
homes of our students, faculty, and staff. Below are some of the new
databases that have recently been added to the Chesnutt Library collection.
SciFinder
Scholar, from the Chemical Abstracts
Service (CAS), a division of the American Chemical Society, provides access to
the bibliographic and abstract information from the CAS databases. These
databases are a source of both patent and journal references including: patents
from 35 patent-granting organizations around the world, more than 8,000
scientific journals and, published scientific research from 1907 to the present.
SciFinder Scholar provides
access to more than 19.5 million organic and inorganic substances and 16.3
million sequences in the CAS Registry, the world’s largest source of chemical
substance information. The CAS
databases are diverse in their coverage, and are not limited solely to chemical
information. In addition to strict chemistry, CA content also includes the
chemical aspects of agriculture, biology, education, history, mathematics,
astronomy, biotechnology, engineering, materials, medicine, archaeology,
economics, geosciences, metallurgy, and physics. Also included is access to
MEDLINE, which covers over 3,900 journals; 1958-present in biomedical
literature. Unfortunately, SciFinder Scholar
is available only on-campus because of publisher restrictions. The
database is available on library computers, and with the one-time download of
some access software, can be accessed from other computers on campus. If
you need assistance in installing SciFinder Scholar
on your computer, contact Jeff Campbell at
extension 1287.
RILM
Abstracts of Music Literature, published by Repertoire International de
Litterature Musicale, New York, contains records in over 100 languages; entries
include original-language titles, title translations in English, full
bibliographic information, and abstracts in English, as well as author, journal,
and in-depth subject indexes. Records appear in over a hundred languages and
include original language titles, title translations in English, full
bibliographic information, and abstracts in English, as well as author, journal,
and in-depth subject indexes. The majority of citations include abstracts. Over
500 scholarly journals are represented. Articles, books, bibliographies,
catalogues, conference proceedings, discographies, dissertations, Festschriften,
films, and videos are covered by RILM, as well as concert reviews, recording
notes, and pedagogical manuals that are of scholarly interest. Over 20,000 new
records are added to the database each year.
Coverage and Update Frequency: 1969-
; Monthly.
Sociological
Abstracts includes abstracts on all aspects of sociology. Sociological
Abstracts provides access to the latest research in sociology and related
disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. The database includes Sociological
Abstracts (SA) sub file containing citations (and abstracts since 1974) for
articles in over 2,790 journals and Social Planning/Policy and Development
Abstracts (SOPODA) that focuses on solutions to social problems. It draws
information from an international selection of journals, serials, conference
papers, books, and dissertations. Coverage and Update Frequency: 1963-
; abstracts since 1974; 6 times a year.
Search Tools
What journals or periodicals does the Chesnutt Library have in paper
format? What journals and periodicals are available electronically? If the
Chesnutt Library doesn't have a journal or periodical I am looking for, where
can I get it? To help our users answer these questions, the library has
acquired a helpful access tool to journal and periodical information.
Journal
Finder is an integrated search interface that allows you to determine if
Chesnutt Library provides electronic access or owns a print copy of specific
periodical titles. Despite its name, Journal Finder includes not just
journals, but also newspapers, magazines, newsletters and other items that are
published more than once a year. Journal Finder provides access to all journals,
newspapers, and magazines that meet one of the following criteria:
- Chesnutt
Library offers immediate online access to a significant amount of full text
for that title.
- Chesnutt
Library owns some printed issues of that title.
- Other
libraries own some printed issues of that title and may provide Interlibrary
Loan of specific articles.
While Journal Finder allows you to determine if
Chesnutt Library has specific periodical publications, another helpful search
tool available through the library is Database
Finder, which allows you to find articles on a given topic.
Once you find out which journals contain the articles you need, you can
at times get direct access to the articles through a specific database, or you
can come back to Journal Finder to find the journal and locate the
specific article.
You can find both Journal Finder and Database
Finder under Articles, Journals, and E-Journals on the Quick
Reference panel on the Chesnutt
Library web site.

The Chesnutt Library Reference
Department has developed Subject Guides to assist library users in accessing
library and Internet resources for various subject areas.

Title III
The Office of Collection Development in the Chesnutt
Library was established with funds from the Higher Education Act, Title III
2(b), awarded by the United States Department of Education. Title III
grant funding continues to fund Library Resources Development at Chesnutt
Library, and to support the Office of Collection Development. In the
recent external review of library activities for 1997-2002 Title III funding,
the external reviewer told the library "to keep up the good
work." With the assistance of the university faculty in recommending
and evaluating library resources, we hope to do that in meeting the objectives
of further developing the library collection through continued Title III
funding.
