Databases and Indexes

Great News for the School of Education! The Chesnutt Library is now providing access to the current years of ERIC E*Subscribe (1996–present). E*Subscribe contains the full-text for approximately 80% of all ERIC documents. ERIC documents cover all areas of education, including adult, urban, rural, vocational, elementary, early childhood, handicapped, gifted, and higher education. You can recognize ERIC documents by their six-digit ED identification number.  ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center), under the U.S. Department of Education, is the primary database for indexing journals and ephemeral documents in education. Until now, the only way you could obtain ERIC ED documents was on microfiche housed in the library, or by ordering the documents from the ERIC Document Reproduction Service (EDRS). Now users may obtain full-text documents covering 1996 to the present as PDF files on their desktops. The Chesnutt Library will continue receiving the microfiche for all the ERIC documents through 2003, but will only subscribe to the microfiche for the 20% of the ERIC documents not available through E*subscribe starting in 2004. To access the full-text documents, continue using ERIC through EBSCOhost as listed in the library's Database Finder

Index to Nearly 100 Years of U.S. Magazines. Readers' Guide Retrospective: 1890-1982 provides indexing to 526 leading magazines back as far as 1890.  Included are citations to more than 3,000,000 articles.  This electronic index provides the equivalent to 44 printed Readers' Guide cumulations that you have previously used in the library. Subjects covered include: Aeronautics, African-Americans, Aging, Archeology, Astronomy, Automobiles, Biographies, Business, Children, Education, Environment, Fashion, Film, Fine Arts, Food, Foreign Affairs, Gardening, Health, History, Hobbies, Home, Journalism, Leisure Activities, Literature, Medicine, Music, News, Nutrition, Photography, Politics, Popular Culture, Radio, Religion, Science, Sports, Technology, Television, and Travel. Click here for a listing of periodicals indexed in Readers' Guide Retrospective.  For indexing and abstracting of periodical titles after 1982, use Reader’s Guide.

Another Resource for the Music ProgramMusic Index, a subject-author guide to music periodical literature, is now available through the Chesnutt Library. Published since 1949, The Music Index: A Subject-Author Guide to Music Periodical Literature is compiled from over 670 international music periodicals offering the researcher access to a wealth of historiographic, ethnographic, and musicological data. A broad range of subjects is covered, including past and present personalities, the history of music, forms and types of music, musical instruments from the earliest times to modern electronic instruments, plus computer produced music. In addition, book reviews, reviews of music recordings, tapes, and performances are indexed. First performances and obituaries are noted. A complete Subject Heading List with cross references, published annually with the quarterly issues and incorporated in the cumulations, facilitates the use of The Music Index, and aids those concerned with the filing of music periodicals. In January, the library acquired RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, which provides abstracts of music literature in over 100 different languages; entries include original-language titles, title translations in English, full bibliographic information, and abstracts in English, as well as author, journal, and in-depth subject indexes. This database was described more fully in the January issue of Collection Development News.

New Databases on Order. Other databases that will soon be available in the Chesnutt Library include: MathSciNet (Mathematical Reviews); PROLA (Physical Review Online); World Bank Development Finance; World Bank World Development Indicators; Value Line Investment Survey; Value Line Research Center; and Social Work Abstracts Plus.  Details will be forthcoming in future issues of Collection Development News.

Patron Training on Databases and Bibliographic Instruction. Vendor training for library patrons on some of the new databases will be offered in the near future.  Stay tuned for details.  If  faculty or classes require training on searching specific databases, please contact Jan Whitfield, Head of Public Services, at 672-1750 or jwhitfield@uncfsu.edu to set up a training session. She will put you in touch with the librarian who handles your discipline (Gloria Garner - School of Business and Economics; Vera Hooks and Jan Whitfield - College of Arts and Sciences; Bernadette Ross - School of Education). Bibliographic Instruction is available from these members of the Reference Department in class and individual sessions. Demonstrations on how to locate books and articles using the automated catalog and journal article databases are available. Sessions on how to identify relevant web sites and searching the Internet effectively are also available.

Name Change. The Military Library FullText database has changed its name to the Military and Government Collection. Designed to offer current news pertaining to all branches of the military, this database offers a thorough collection of periodicals, academic journals and other content pertinent to the increasing needs of those sites. The Military & Government Collection provides cover-to-cover full text for nearly 300 journals and periodicals. The database also includes full text for 245 pamphlets and offers indexing and abstracts for nearly 400 titles. Some publications covered in this database include  Air Force Controller, Army Reserve Magazine, Defense Studies, Global Security Review, Joint Force Quarterly, Military Technology, National Review, Defense, Combat Edge, FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin, Foreign Affairs, Military Technology, Naval Forces, and many more. Many full text titles are available in native (searchable) PDF, or scanned-in-color.

Database Finder. Access all of the Chesnutt Library's electronic databases through Database Finder.

A Library on the Move

If you have been in the library the last few weeks, you probably have noticed a different look in the library. Shelves are being moved, books and microfilm are scattered about, study areas are being relocated, computer workstations are being consolidated, etc.  All of these moves are taking place in order to provide better service to library patrons.  Some features of the new service plan include:

  1. A central information service desk located right off the lobby.  This will allow patrons to go to one central service area to have their information needs met, instead of going to the more remote reference and periodicals information desks that currently exist.
  2. Centralization of all patron computers in one area.  Instead of trying to cover three scattered computer areas, the library staff  will be better able to assist patrons in one area near the information service desk.
  3. New shelving in the reference area.  This will better accommodate the fast growing collection of reference materials.
  4. Relocation of the microfilm shelving to the area next to the daily newspapers. Two acres of dirt have been removed the microfilm containers, and some of the previously scattered titles have been relocated to a contiguous area in the reshelving process.
  5. Additional shelving for the periodicals back files on the second floor.  This additional shelving, in conjunction with a deselection of unused periodical back files, will provide a centralized and better organized area for the housing of the periodical back files.  The periodicals department is also making a stellar effort in keeping all the periodicals better shelved on a timely basis.  More money has also been allocated for the binding of many of the key unbound journal titles.
  6. A replacement plan for the aging microfilm reader-printers has been initiated.  Some of the older and less reliable machines have been removed, and the first of a new generation of reader-digital scanners and printers has been acquired. The plan is to add more new machines as money allows.
  7. More training is being offered to library staff members to better equip them in servicing the computer and microfilm equipment.

National Library Week

Please help the library celebrate National Library Week April 6-12. The theme will be "Knowledge Uncovered @ Chesnutt Library." A knowledge fair will be held Monday, April 7th from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.; Tuesday, April 8th from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.; Wednesday, April 9th from 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.; and Thursday April 10th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Different departments within the Library will be available to demonstrate and discuss library services, electronic databases, web sites and how materials are acquired. Drawings for prizes will be held each half hour during the fair, and refreshments will be provided.

Chesnutt Library User Survey

We ask that you participate in the Chesnutt Library User Survey which will be conducted in April.  The survey will be available electronically on the library web site and also in paper format in the library.  Your participation in the survey will help the library improve patron services.
