FOR ONLINE, OFF-CAMPUS, AND DISTANCE LEARNERS

Eligibility for Services

Students currently enrolled in Fayetteville State University courses from off campus, And who are not enrolled in any courses taught on campus, are qualified to receive the following services and access resources. Gateway to the library’s online catalog, electronic databases, Internet resources, and to information about Charles W. Chesnutt Library.

The online catalog provides access to books, journal titles and non-print media of FSU, UNC-Pembroke and UNC-Wilmington.  The Catalog provides access to bibliographic records for electronic journals, databases, selected internet resources, and to FSU and UNC-W holdings of government documents published by the United States Government Printing Office and the State of North Carolina. Catalog records are enhanced with links to web resources.

Chesnutt Library subscribes to electronic resources, including databases, journals, E-books, journal indexes with abstracts and full text, reference titles such as encyclopedias, dictionaries and directories, as well as review and news sources. Electronic access to full text with graphs and images is available to all FSU students, faculty and staff twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. E-Books (http://library.uncfsu.edu/ebooks.html).
E-books provide access to nonfiction, novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and historical documents available in their entirety.  NetLibrary, a collection of online, cover-to-cover full text books and LION, a searchable collection of over a quarter million works of poetry, drama, and prose are licensed for the FSU community by the Chesnutt Library.  To access e-books off campus you will need to follow the directions provided on Chesnutt Library's Off-Campus Access: Access Online Resources page: (http://library.uncfsu.edu/offcampuse.html). 


Services Provided
Reference Services
Distance Learning students are encouraged to use the Reference Services provided by the library. Students may submit queries and requests for assistance in using the resources of the library to Jan Whitfield,  jwhitfield@uncfsu.edu.  Online Subject Guides and Virtual Reference Guides are provided to assist you with library and online resources.

Journal Article and ERIC Document Requests
If the needed article is not available via Chesnutt Library’s electronic resources, you may request photocopies. Photocopies of Chesnutt Library’s complete microfiche collection of ERIC Documents may also be requested. Up to 25 pages of an ERIC Document or Chesnutt Library journal article will be printed and mailed to you, copyright law permitting.  There is no charge for this service.  The Library has recently acquired access to 80% of ERIC Documents online back to 1986 through:

     ERIC via EBSCOHost: Coverage is from 1966 - present of journal articles and documents
     such
as reports, handbooks, and monographs in education. ERIC, the Educational Resource
     Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources. The database provides
     access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and
     Resources in Education Index. ERIC provides full text of more than 2,200 digests along with
     references for additional information and citations and abstracts from over 1,000 educational
     and education-related journals.

Interlibrary Loan Services through ILLiad
Requested articles not available as part of Chesnutt Library holdings will be obtained from other libraries using the Interlibrary Loan Service.  Registration is required through ILLiad, which will allow you to submit your requests electronically.  Access registration:  http://library.uncfsu.edu/illiad.htm.   When the article is received, the library will mail it to you.

Circulation Services
Checkout Library Materials from Chesnutt Library:

Distance Learning students may check out materials from Chesnutt Library without visiting the library.  E-books are available electronically.  Please call Gloria Garner at 910-672-1236 or email her at ggarner@uncfsu.edu to request a book be sent to you.  The requested book will be sent by mail. Postage for returning books to Chesnutt Library is the responsibility of the borrower. Books must be received by Chesnutt Library by the due date to avoid overdue notices.  Three overdue notices will result in being billed for the book's replacement costs.

Reserve Services
Electronic Reserve items, listed on course reserve lists, allow you to retrieve the text of readings wherever you are. On the Library homepage click on "Course Reserves" under Research Tools and choose to search either by Course Name or Instructor. Locate the item you want to retrieve and if it says *ELECTRONIC COPY AVAILABLE* in the Format column you will be able to click on the title and it will take you to the Patron Authentification Page where you enter your name, SS#, and Library PIN.  Visit the following link for more information on Reserves.

Checkout Library Materials from Universities in the UNC System
The University of North Carolina has implemented a policy which permits students and faculty to borrow materials from other UNC System schools using a current student ID card, Driver's License or photo identification instead of The University of North Carolina Library Privilege Card (Cooperative Borrowers Card). Students are responsible for showing they are currently enrolled at their home institution.  Student may use their ID card or N. C. Driver's License to verify their identity and checkout materials from any of the16 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina. Up to five items may be borrowed during any two-week period. The borrowers however, will be responsible for the safe and prompt return of these materials, and any fines or replacement costs.  They are also subject to the rules of the lending institution.  The loan period is not renewable.
