What Are E-Books?

Electronic Books (E-Books) are novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and or historical documents available in their entirety, online.  Some of the collections listed below are available to anyone; others (like NetLibrary and LION) are licensed only for the FSU community

Alex Catalogue of Electronic Texts
Includes American literature, English literature, and Western philosophy. The Alex Catalogue is browsable by author and title, but also supports full-text searching. It also allows you to generate PDF (Portable Document Format) and ebook versions. Sponsored by the Berkeley Digital Library.
 

American Memory: Historical Collections for the National Digital Library Program
American Memory is "the multimedia collections of digitized documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text from the Library of Congress' Americana collections." The Collection Finder provides many options for browsing the collections.
 

Avalon Project: Documents in Law, History and Government
Includes documents in "law, history, economics, politics, diplomacy and government" from the Western world since the Middle Ages, but with emphasis on modern times. One can browse the project by century or perform akeyword search.  Sponsored by the Yale Law School.

Bartleby.com
A selective, high-quality collection of reference works (including an excellent quotations collection), verse (American and English), fiction (American and English), and nonfiction (mostly famous early 20th century works).

GPO Access
The U.S. Government Printing Office provides electronic texts from all three branches of government.
 

Internet Public Library Online Texts Collection
Over 13,000 texts browsable and searchable by author, title, and Dewey Decimal Classification. Sponsored by the School of Information at the University of Michigan.

LION (Literature Online) (FSU users only)
A fully-searchable library of over 260,000 works of English and American literature.


NetLibrary (
FSU users only
A collection of online, cover-to-cover full text books.  Users have access to over 150 books from the FSU private collection and 13,000 books from academic, professional, and reference publishers from the NCLIVE/Solinet collection, as well as over 4,000 literary classics in the public domain (the "Public Collection"). All the words in the available ebooks can be searched. The full text of one individual book can also be searched. Using NetLibrary's ebook reader software, users can create annotations, highlight text, add notes, place bookmarks, and create citations. 
 

On-Line Books
Links to over 11,000 English-language works, including literary classics, technical manuals, government publications, and self-published works. This site supports browsing by author, title, and subject, and searching by author and title. Sponsored by the Digital Library Project of the University of Pennsylvania Library.
